DENTAL HYGIENE

Dr. Rooke believes that Preventive Dentistry, including routine professional dental hygiene appointments, is a key component to maintaining overall health and preventing oral pain. There have been many health issues such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, and chronic inflammatory disorders that are directly correlated with oral health status.

Gum Disease/Periodontal Disease

The gums, ligaments, and bone around the teeth form the foundation for one's teeth. These structures are also referred to as the periodontium. When the periodontium is not healthy, it jeopardizes the teeth just as a bad foundation would threaten the stability of a house. Signs of unhealthy gums or gum disease include: gums that are red and bleed easily, persistent bad breath, gums that are pulled away from the tooth, loose teeth, and changes in the position or bite of the teeth. Any of these may be a sign of gum disease.

Dr. Rooke evaluates all new patients for gum disease, and our highly trained hygienists check for gum disease at all cleaning visits. If gum disease is detected, treatment will be initiated to arrest the disease process in order to prevent bone loss and tooth loss. The treatment usually involves a deep cleaning or root planing done under a local anesthetic. If the gum disease gets too severe a referral to our periodontist may be needed.
